Spotlight With Joyce Smith of Wordsmith and Giveaway!

Hey everyone! I wanted to share this fantastic giveaway we are having over that the Bloom Blog! It’s definitely one you DO NOT want to miss!! Do not leave a comment here…go to the Bloom Blog and leave it there.

Hello! I’m Joyce Smith, English professor-turned-photographer-turned-photographer’s-new-best-friend. When I was working on my Ph.D. in English literature and teaching freshman composition, I never imagined that I’d eventually bring my love of grammar, syntax, and all that other stuff that makes your head hurt to my career as a photographer. It quickly became obvious to me, however, that clear communication is paramount to creating a “good faith” working relationship with clients. Not to mention the fact that–let’s face it–writing is hard. I’ve always found it interesting that even gifted writers often loathe the laborious act of putting pen to paper or, even worse, staring at the dreaded blinking cursor. Experience writer’s block or frustration as you struggle for the right words no longer! Visit the WordSmith site to find guides that will make your life as a photographer infinitely easier and oh-so-eloquent . . . today!

I’d love to offer one lucky winner a complete set of everything WordSmith ($500+ value), which includes all of the following WordSmith goodies:

• {what to wear} children and family
• {what to write}
• more {what to write}
• {how to sell}
• {what to wear} seniors
• the senior pricing menu
• {breathe}
• session stories volume one
& more!

How do you enter? Head over to Wordsmith Facebook page and “like it”. Then go to the everything bloom blog and leave a comment over there in THIS POST. You have until this Friday to enter, contest will close at 8pm CST.
If you do not win, don’t despair! Instead, enjoy a discount for one week following the contest of 15% off any WordSmith purchase. Just use code BLOOM when you purchase.

“What _____ Looks Like” Lifestyle Challenge (month 6)

We are half way through! Virtual high five everyone!! Here we are at month 6 of our “what _______ looks like” and if you go through the entire circle (which I’m hoping you will), you’ll see some new faces that are extremely talented!! So….as you can see, I’m telling you all to make sure you go through the entire circle. HEE-HEE!!

For my month 6 of this project, We packed the kids up and headed to the Dallas Zoo on a cold and windy Saturday morning. Honestly, that’s the best time to go because it’s pretty empty so for us photographers it’s like hitting the mother load with taking photos,

So enough chit chat….I present to you all “What The Dallas Zoo Looks Like.” And make sure you head over to the blog of Gina Oh | Arroyo Grande, CA Photographer and see what her challenge project looks like for month 6.

Sorry for the picture overload! If you made it this far…thanks sticking with me!

{elevate} a fine art photography exploration: volume 5

Create by Nichole Van, I’ve banded together with a handful of other photographers to start a blog project focusing on exploring the fine art side of photography. Each month, we will post a photo or series of images focused on art and photography. There are no rules. Just post what comes from the heart and allow the inner artist a chance to explore and fly.

I know the definition of “fine art” means so many different things to so many people. That’s the great thing about what we do…its all subjective. It’s totally up to the viewer to make that choice. For me “fine art” is defined in so many different ways. Of course, all the paintings by the great ones, inspiring portraitures and processing techniques are just to name a few. When I decided to join this group one of my main purposes for doing it was to get back to where it all started for me (and probably many of you too), basically where the fun was and that was photoshop. I often get asked, “how did you learn photoshop?” The best way for me was to just play and play and play. See, I had an old version of it that didn’t support actions so in seeing all of these amazing photographs from others being processed by actions, I was so jealous but I vowed to try to re-create the look the best I could. Of course I made LOTS of mistakes but the beauty of it was I discovered so much in doing so. And I think that eventually lead me to just be bold sometimes when I edit. I remember those days fondly too….spending hours and hours playing with just one photograph and being so proud of myself when I achieved something I really liked. Well, yesterday, that feeling came back. I really don’t have the time to spend playing in photoshop with the kiddos, the forum, workshops, my clients etc and that’s OK, but it’s cool that this group gives me 1 day out of 30 that I allow myself to do that.

So, with this month’s fine art image, I took a plain old “nothing to spectacular about it” photo and tried to make it interesting. I had the best intent on letting you all know my steps but after like the 20th snapshot, the 3rd artistic filter and slapping on the 5th texture, I loss track of my steps so I’m so sorry for that.

And here’s a side by side before and after:

Thanks everyone for stopping by and please check out our first elevate post for 2012 by visiting Martha Schuster | i see the moon photography | Long Beach, CA.
